Highlights:

The population count 2003 is a national mid-year population count, which was conducted by National Statistics Centre in July 2003. The purpose of the mid-year population count is to provide up-to-date basic population data on Population Distribution and Population Size, Household Structure, Fertility, Mortality, Migration and Needed Service Infrastructure for Population.

The population count focuses on some additional topics for the three southern provinces Saravane, Sekong and Attapeu. The focusing topics are population count by age group, number of children aged 0-4 years who died during last 12 months, and maternal deaths.

Purpose

The purpose of the population count is to provide up-to-date basic data on population size, population distribution and other demographic characteristics of the population.
 

Target population

All private and collective Lao households. All Lao people present in the household on the 01 July 2003. Population means Lao ethnic people (including foreigners) regularly living in the villages in a period of 6 months and over, legally under the village administration (excluding persons that were temporary studying, visitors, and policemen, who were not legally under administration of village, district and province. Prisoners were also excluded).
 

Survey period

Reference period is July 1, 2003. Data was collected in July 2003.
 

Survey design

Population count 2003 was a head count done by the head of village covering every household in the village.
